MyPoints.com is running a flash sale right now. They’re offering 150 points per $1, up to $500, on OpenSky purchases. OpenSky is one of those celebrity-curated discount shopping sites. You can earn up to 75,000 MyPoints, which can be redeemed for gift cards with every major merchant you can imagine: Macys, Banana Republic, Bloomingdales, Amazon, and more.
There are also several travel gift cards. For 75,000 points you can redeem $575 in Hyatt gift cards, $600 Marriott gift cards, or 37,500 United Miles. Points do take 30 days to post, so keep that in mind. That being said, you are getting some extra cash back, plus some merchandise you can sell online. However, the terms are concerning to me:
This offer is valid on purchases up to $500 per household. If you cancel, exchange or return your purchase, Points awarded for your original transaction will be deducted from your account.
Points are available until 9/30/12, or until the maximum number of Points have been claimed. Once the maximum number of Points have been claimed, the offer will no longer be available and you will be directed back to the MyPoints website.
Your Points will be credited within 30 days of completing the transaction.
OpenSky points are different from Points earned in the MyPoints program and may not be used for MyPoints rewards.
I don’t know why there is mention of OpenSky points being different. My suspicion is that this indicates you’re earning 150 OpenSky Points per $1. Many bloggers are suggesting using an American Express credit card for this purchase, so you’ll have Price Protection as a back-up in case this turns out to be a scam.
I do want to warn those of you who are getting in on this deal. Two years ago, I used MyPoints and there were several instances when my points weren’t credited. I once earned 4,500 points on a purchase with Estee Lauder that they wouldn’t credit to my account, despite the proof I provided. After my second email, I logged in to find my account had been closed. As well as that of every person I had referred. They wouldn’t give us a reason or let us redeem the thousands of points we had earned so far. While 150 points per $1 is an amazing deal, be prepared for the possibility of not getting credit for your purchases.
I’m steering clear of this deal, but I’d love to know if any of you are taking advantage of it and whether you end up getting your points.
