Not sure I’ll be able to participate in today’s chat – I’ve got back to back meetings all day. That said, I was able to answer some of your questions during my morning commute … hope you find them relevant and useful in today’s discussion.
Q1: What are your most important electronic gadgets on The Road Less Travelled?
A1: cell or satellite phone, walkie-talkies, digital camera, portable world radio, petzel headlamp, gopro, fenix tactical pocket flashlight (960 lumens), spot3 gps tracker, digital ranger finder (if hiking in the desert)
Q2: What are your most important non-electronic gadgets on The Road Less Travelled?
A2: water bottle w/fluids, pen/pad, watch, swiss army multi-tool, butane torch lighter, bleach for disinfecting water, waterproof diving case w/ lanyard – worn around neck (for cash, atm card, credit card, drivers id, emergency contact numbers, loose change), ~25 ft of climbing rope, water proof backpack, biodegradable fluorescent markers for leaving a trail, pepper spray, duct tape, extra eye glasses, possibly even a hand gun? – depending on local laws (useful when hiking out in the Alaskan wilderness)
Q3: Do you have any gadgets that you bring on TRLT that you don’t bring to more popular tourist destinations?
A3: Everything listed in A1 except: cellphone, digital camera, gopro 🙂
Q4: What is the oddest gadget you have purchased or used on The Road Less Travelled?
A4: I had a friend let me borrow his military grade night-vision goggles when I hiked to the summit of Mt Saint Helens.
Q5: Has there been an instance where a gadget was especially useful on The Road Less Travelled?
A5: Especially useful? – No … not yet, but I consider that a good thing … Most of my gadgets have been useful strictly as a matter of convenience and for peace of mind … I’ve been lucky in that sense.
