IHG PointBreaks Reservations Now Limited to Two Per Hotel

IHG has made what I see as a positive change to the terms and conditions pertaining to the PointBreaks program. Going forward, members can only make two PointBreaks reservations per hotel, per quarter.

For those who are unfamiliar with PointBreaks, it’s a quarterly list of IHG properties that can be booked for just 5,000 points per night. During the booking period, these heavily discounted rooms are offered on a limited, first-come, first-serve basis.

Since space is limited, a major problem has always been availability. Some members blocked out several months of availability by making multiple reservations. This allowed the person booking the award to shore up their travel plans without missing out on a great deal, since they could cancel the unwanted dates without penalty. However, those who had actual travel dates in mind would lose out because the majority of the dates had already been booked by the former group.

Personally, I think this is a fair change and one that is beneficial to most of us. Members can still cancel PointBreaks reservations without penalty, so even if you can’t make your travel plans work around your hotel stay, you can still get out of them entirely.

What are your thoughts on the change in terms?

  1. Not impressed with the latest change. Two nights is very restrictive…perhaps a maximum of 5-7 nights per member would be more acceptable.
